Security experts are tracking a new kind of virus attack in which users of infected machines are charged a fee to have their PCs restored to normal.
Known as GPcoder, the virus uses the PGP utility to encrypt the contents of the infected machine. It also leaves a text file that contains an e-mail address and instructs the user to send a payment of $200 in return for the encryption key. The malware began appearing in the last couple of weeks and has security experts concerned that it may be the beginning of a new wave of such attacks.
